Introduced to Collard Greens on a lovely day in St. Petersburg. We had never visited the Deuces area of St. Pete and learned about the ethnic/business history of the area at the same time being introduced in a delicious fun setting about the southern favorite Collard Greens. Sponsored in part by Publix, we even received a free can of Glory Seasoned Collard Greens. Festival was very well organized with ample free parking and just the right amount of vendors and food trucks.
The Collard Smoothie was the biggest hit. Blended with apple juice, frozen grapes and bananas—who knew?? and what a gorgeous green color!
The prize winning Mary Frances handed out Mini Chocolate Collard Cupcakes and Bacon-Flavored Chocolate Collard Cupcakes. YUM.
A huge tent with linen-covered tables provided a great setting behind the Creole Cafe for the lunch serving of Stewed Collards and Mini Cornbreads ($5.00 pp). Choices offered were collards with smoked turkey or vegetarian collards. We had one of each. Awesome introduction to collards.
Fabulous murals and friendly neighbors completed our terrific adventure.
