A Visit to Apple Country
A glorious visit to apple country and friends in Western New York State along the shores of Lake Ontario on a recent visit for Roy’s special 30th Anniversary celebration of New Horizons in Rochester, created many tasty eating opportunities, including Apple Pie.
One of my favorite orchards in the whole world is Hurd Orchards, a women-owned farm, on RT. 104 in Holley,NY. They are more than apple growers—they are an event center for weddings, etc. and serve fall lunches in the barn (as seen on the menu in the photo.) They have a wonderful gift shop interspersed with apples of course, jams and jellies and baked goods (see Apple Pie photo).
Farm Intro
“Hurd Orchards is a family owned fruit and flower farm and canning company nestled in the fertile lake plains of Western New York between the banks of the Erie Canal and the shores of Lake Ontario. Almost two hundred years ago our ancestors came to these lands and began to till the soil and build communities.”
Fascinating History
20-ounce apples were developed by farmers in this area to be the best apples for applesauce. Indeed, less work since they are so big. This basket could only hold 6 (20-ounce)apples.
More than Apples
Hurd Orchards also grow beautiful dahlias which are part of specialized centerpieces, sold or special ordered at the store. The centerpieces abound on the barn tables and set a stylish, fall-centered atmosphere where lunches are served.
Hurd Orchards are open until December. Remember, apples keep well in cold storage. YUM.
